Get Away to Martha's
Vineyard
Martha's
Vineyard is an ideal place to get away from it all, so hop
on the Martha's Vineyard ferries from Falmouth. Located 7
miles off the Cape Cod coastline, the beautiful island of
Martha's Vineyard offers a vacation ambiance unlike any other.
Explore the diversity of its six towns, take long walks along
the pristine shores, and step back in time to a leisurely
lifestyle. Each of the Island's towns provides access to spectacular
beaches, harbors, wineries, outdoor activities, and a diverse
selection of shops, restaurants, performing arts and attractions.
Owen Park on Martha's Vineyard
Named for a local whaling captain, Owen Park overlooks Vineyard
Haven Harbor, home to hundreds of wooden boats in the summertime.
A peaceful spot located near the ferry and Main Street, Owen
Park and Owen Park Beach are great places to enjoy a picnic
or wait for the ferry. Local town bands as well as visiting
bands hold concerts here in the summer.
Martha's Vineyard - Menemsha
Journey down the rural roads of Martha's Vineyard, past field
and farm, heath and heather, to the simple fishing hamlet
of Menemsha. The town beach at Menemsha, overlooking Vineyard
Sound, offers spectacular views of the Elizabeth Islands and
is considered the premier spot to watch the sunset on the
island. Nearby fish market, deli, and shops near Dutcher's
Dock make Menemsha a perfect lunch or evening excursion.
Martha's Vineyard Beaches
The unspoiled charm of Martha's Vineyard is best exemplified
by the island's many scenic beaches. The beaches vary
from protected, shallow, clear-water stretches on the northern
and eastern sides of the Island to expanses of rumbling surf
along the south side. Some beaches are open to the public
without restriction, while others are reserved for residents
and summer visitors. To use these town beaches, one needs
a parking and/or beach permit. Permits can be obtained by
contacting the town hall in the appropriate community.
Martha's Vineyard - Landscape and Landmarks!
About a 15-minute walk along East Chop Drive, off Oak Bluffs
Harbor, the East Chop Lighthouse is perched atop Telegraph
Hill, a scenic bluff overlooking Nantucket Sound. The Martha's
Vineyard Historical Society offers sunset tours each Sunday
from the end of June until Columbus Day, in good weather.
Check out the country's oldest platform merry-go-round still
in operation, the Flying Horses, a National Historical Landmark
on Martha's Vineyard.
